The file /var/dpkg/available has become corrupted -- not sure how, but
I cannot see any way to recover. I am assuming that the solution is
too reinstall everything. I am assuming there is a package called
dpkg as at present I have no packages

Copy the available-old file over available, if that isn't corrupted --
otherwise empty the available file and use "dselect update" to update it
again.
