There's so much variation on the topic of which software to put in what category, I think we should drop the whole idea. This is not debian-junior, the requirements are different, and I think pretty much any preselection wouldn't be used for more than ideas, or suggested software if you want it that way. A better solution, I think, is to enable local groups to make their own selections. "Roll Your Own Debian-based Distro", so to say. We have this working with the Skolelinux project, more or less, and with some polish everybody should be able to use something similar. Don't ask me about the details, but basically: Some text files, listing what should go into the metapackages. Some definitions on what should go into the configuration files. Then add some tools, and voila, CD images. (I think this would be popular with other debian projects too. Any large organization would want something half preconfigured, half autoconfiguring they could just smack into a box and have it work. Their own special-purpose distribution.) There's also a lot of dibs on localized efforts you could never have with something international. Regular workshops and socializing bind us together and drives us on. We can cooperate and get grants and project money an international effort could never have. The difference between the international Debian project and the local school is simply too large for most. We need to address the different circumstances around the world in different ways. Just like having a north american in charge of localization packages can be a pain in the ass because he doesn't understand the basic nature of our problems. Harald
