When you insert the USB stick in the worksation, your system must detect it. Check in the /var/log/message if there are any sign of detection. If there are no such sign, it mean the USB hardware of your worksation is not detected by the kernel. In this case you can try to use another USB driver usb-ohci.o or usb-uhci.o I am not sure about this name.
