I thought your question was one of moving spare space _between_ LVM volumes. First steps of my procedure was to release unused space from an LVM volume. If you have unused space on a raw disk already you obviously do not need those steps. If you do not want LVM at all then the procedure is reduced to the following: 1. Run cfdisk and setup the spare space as a default (82) partition. 2. Reboot 3. mke2fs -j /dev/whatever_the_name_of_the_partition Personally I find advantages of using LVM. I disagree with the partitioning scheme chosen for Skolelinux, but would not avoid LVM.
