Maybe you want to have a look at http://debian.rfc2324.org/debian/pool/rbm-apt-watch (or deb http://debian.rfc2324.org/debian woody rbm-apt-watch) This contains a script that will do a rather similar thing: run 'apt-get update' if this was successfull run 'apt-get upgrade -s' and write a mail to root (or someone else) to inform that there are things to be updated, if there are some. You are also able to exclude packages via a regex. We're using that thing on all our servers at work. Ciao Max
