* English: Our contact in Scribona, the Norwegian largest hardware distributor, has offered us to do a trial with Debian sarge on an OpenPower (POWER5 processor-based) server. The idea is to test it in a standard school environment. OpenPower also have virtualization features that could be nice in municipalities that runs an centralised operation with Skolelinux and thousands or ten thousands of users.
Scribona will also facilitate an 2 days workshop for 2 persons with testing out the server. This workshop is free of charge, but you have to pay your own transportation expenses. So, is you the one that want's to participate on this? Send an e-mail on the list :-) http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/openpower/hardware/720.html * Norsk: Vr kontakt hos Scribona, Norges strste maskinleverandr, nsker gjre et utprving av den nye OpenPower-tjeneren (POWER5 basert prosessor). In the next step we got 3 OpenPower systems to the university of Augsburg Markus Zahn <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. From the IBM side Michael Perzl and myself worked on it. Cajus Pollmeier of Gonicus (http://www.gonicus.de) has been very instrumental in getting Debian Sarge running on IBM pSeries and OpenPower systems (specifically adapting the Debian installer, building a 64-bit tool chain etc.). Basically Debian Sarge runs now on every current IBM POWER-based systems which is Linux-enabled, i.e., every POWER4- and POWER5-based system but also IBM systems based on the PPC970 PowerPC processor (JS20 Blade) We are currently in the process of installing three OpenPower 720 systems at the University of Augsburg to better support the Debian community and to make access via the internet much easier for people interested in Debian on POWER hardware. The main purpose of these systems is to serve as an Internet Debian build host which should make it easier for people/developers interested in Debian on POWER to get acess to the systems and use them to port/recompile their applications on POWER.
