I'm interested in gnome (and 2.6) too. Not as in trying to make a desicion on Skolelinux (or debian-edu) to use Gnome by default, but as support for alternative configurations. To see how popular this is, so Skolelinux and debian-edu can make their own choices. To get some tasksel alternatives into the distro? Sure, the packages don't have to be on a cd yet, with a big webcache *) downloading from the net works fine for most installations. *) See http://bugs.skolelinux.no/show_bug.cgi?id=924 on how to enable caching of apt packages. Then extend the squid cache if possible (mine ticks in at 2 Gb right now, though it probably doesn't have to be this big) While configuring the proxy server: The maximum file size can be smallish, especiall if you have the cache size to support caching of some big files. Some packages exceed 10Mb, and can even be upgraded often. Using the hash lfuda method for the disk storage could also be an idea, since this chooses cached files to remove based on popularity (and age) only, not based on file size. Be sure to have the cache size to keep the small files at any rate, though. Here's the package list I use for workstations right now. Some packages heere do not do well on a serrver, though. Especially ss ssmtp, since installing this will remove exim4.
