Is it using the wrong tool? For umounted directories, I would expect
it to use ext2resize and not ext2online. The latter only work if the
kernel support resizing mounted directories, and the kernels in debian
do not as far as I know.
Well if what you say there is right, guess this is a bug in *e2fsadm.*
