In Debian-edu lwat is configured to add samba account information to a new user.
If samba is not configured correctly during installation (by using
/usr/bin/samba-debian-edu-admin) lwat is really confused.
This is a bug of debian-edu-config, and not of lwat.
maybe a test should be added to /usr/sbin/debian-edu-test-install
