Hi,
regarding synaptic: you need to run it as root...
regarding the other problem: what was the output when you
ran "dpkg --configure -a" as root? I suspect adept hung, because the kernel
package prompted for some input, which could be because you did some changes
to your system.
adept-updater is working fine here for updates. Lowering the severity, as no
one else reported problems with adept so far.
adept-manager is not suited for updates, afaik, only for upgrades.
