Dear list, as opposed to Windows installations, I am glad needing no hardware protection to secure the dual boot Skolelinux installation.
On the other hand, I observe cases where the non-protection shows disadvantages: Especially in school labs, it happens that machines are turned off during booting or running. In these cases, the Linux installation can run into trouble - at least ckdsk is necessary. I am quite sure that it whould be possible to mount /usr and /boot ro. As logs go to tjener, even /etc and /var could be kept non-writable. Another approach would clone the technique of Protector hardware, simulating a transparent layer on the hard disk that will be gone after reboot. Same thing is used by unionfs: Knoppix makes CD-ROM partition seemingly writable by merging in a RAM-Disk. I believe if we find a simple (KISS!) way to implement a mostly r-o Workstation, this would be much more robust in school settings. What do you think? Usefull? Feasable? Regards Ralf One step beyond: Suspend running KDM to disk, and start from a frozen copy within no-time for any further boot... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
