Hi, Nigel. Please test a Japanese installation of the daily built Debian Edu/Lenny version. I recommend Standalone installation now unless you already got a working main-server, as the main-server is currently broken (powerdns replaces bind but lack configuration).
I hope it will install Japanese input methods and translattions by default. Please let me know if it does not work. If you want to download as little as possible up front, I recommend the netinst CD, available from <URL:http://ftp.skolelinux.org/cd-lenny-test-amd64-i386-powerpc-netinst/> as well as ftp and rsync.
