I find it useful to once in a while check our DVDs content with the list of packages currently being used by Debian Edu installations (as reported by popcon.skolelinux.org, to make sure we include in our tasks the packages schools are using. It is important to know that not all the packages on the DVD is installed (suggested and ignored task packages are included too), so one need to follow a different process to make sure the most wanted packages are installed too. :)
Here is the current list of packages used last week by 5% or more of the population. It is extracted using 'grep notoncd sort-by-popcon-lenny-test-dvd.txt' and then extracting all packages with value >= 5 in the second column. (notoncd) mean that the package is not on the DVD, while (notwanted) mean that it is not listed in our tasks. The first column is how many machines got the package installed. PDF viewer (acroread) and Java implementation (sun-java6-bin) continue to be the most popular non-free package used by Debian Edu machines. I wish the free PDF viewers would soon be enough to replace acroread. OpenJDK will replace the non-free Java in the future, so that issue should be solved how. dcraw is a image processing tool. Perhaps we should include it? freenx continue to be popular. I really wish someone would succeed in getting it into Debian. cmt is a collection of music related plugins. Perhaps something to add to the music task? Several gnome tools seem to be used. I guess someone install the Gnome desktop to replace the KDE one on their installations. I suspect some of these should be added to the desktop-gnome task, but leave that to someone using Gnome. Also, several command line tools are listed (screen, deborphan, hddtemp, rkhunter, htop). Perhaps we should add some of them to our toolbox? I'm going to add these (if you know more about the packages, please advice if Ignore should be increased to suggest or recommend): common: Recommend: deborphan, hddtemp, htop Ignore: screen, rkhunter music: Ignore: cmt graphics: Ignore: dcraw Note that Only Depends and Recommends are installed by default, while Suggests are included on the DVD. Some of the Ignored packages make it to the DVD too. I use Ignored packages mostly to put them on our radar to see if we want to include them.
