I think one of the better write-ups on sound configuration I've found is this one
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=12497 The section the author describes as: This enables me to get pulseaudio to work with some applications it wouldn't normally work with, specifically applications using OpenAl. This creates virtual devices in Alsa which applications which cannot use Pulseaudio directly to play sounds. The default device is still Pulseaudio however. This setup will play every application on my system. Including Audacity. I think has solved several issues for me by including those stubs.
