I had a closer look, and the problem seem to be caused by the fact that grub2 is used in Squeeze. The current setup in debian-edu-artwork follow the behavour of grub version 1. I was unable to figure out how to set it up to use a background image with grub version 2. Nothing in the grub documentation in /usr/share/doc/grub*.
