No, Intel. I had to get updated ALSA drivers,

Ah, so simply the "laptop too new for distro" syndrome. Thanks for clarifying.

...and pragmatic mindset blurs the perception of "Free".  If enough users enjoy non-free Java being "just an apt-get away" then those non-free offerings from Adobe, NVIDIA and SUN are part of what is "getting stronger".  Haleluja!

Teachers expect flash sites to work. If they don't work, everyone points the finger at me with my crazy hippy ideals about freedom.

I install non-free software because the free versions don't work well enough. I know the blame lies with the closed software, but I can't win that argument in my school.

I did not mean to say that you are evil for not using purely Free stuff.

My point was that surpirse like your own (as you put it initially) of expecting Ubuntu-friendly hardware to also be Debian-friendly partly are fuelled by relaxed perception of Free:

Ubuntu is not Free Software (only big parts of it is).

Google is not Free Service (only big parts of their *software* are).

Hope that clarifies.

No doubt your school efforts lead in a good direction - I did not mean to fingerpoint your work, only your easily misinterpreted summarising.

Kind regards,
