I investigated some more, and the change was introduced in version 2.30 of choose-mirror, with a comment that the compatibility code was removed because it was supporting preseedings for Etch and after Lenny was released it was time to drop it for Squeeze. This make me believe the correct thing to do is to change the script also for Lenny.
