I've now tested the change, and it worked. The medaapplet started as it should on a new user after removing /etc/skel/.kde/share/config/kickerrc and adding /etc/xdg/autostart/mediaapplet.desktop. For the Squeeze version, I've dropped the .kde directory from /etc/skel/ in svn. For Lenny, I am not sure it make sense to spend time on it, as the current implementation work.
