Hi, the German (Baden-Württemberg) Linux school server uses the IPCop Firewall distribution. It either runs on a dedicated machine or in User-Mode-Linux on the school server.
What do you think about IpCop? What about running it in UML? Does Debian-Edu include a web frontend to administrate a firewall / web-filter? What do you use?
