Hi folks,

I'm running an old buster debian edu server for some years now.

A few months ago the harddrive started to fail. Consequently I mirrored the faulty one to a new one using dd, which fixed my problem nicely.

About 2 days ago I tried a glibc update. I knew that this is a risky task but still wanted to try. Anyway, I failed.

Since I still had the broken hard drive available I simply mirrored it again to my harddrive. Again, this worked nicely and the system is booting again. Unfortunately, unlike in the last attempt, I'm not able to login except as user root.

I had similiar issues like this before in the past and it occurs e.g. when the date is not set correctly. This time it appears to be a different issue. How can I fix or debug this?

Kind regards,
Roman

This sounds like the LDAP server is not running. Do you find any items in /var/log/syslog about slapd (name of the LDAP server executable)?
