There is a patch (03_fix-wpa.patch) applied to the source, enabling HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT and HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT defines. These are needed for proper wpa_supplicant and network-manager operation. My very blind guess is that they may interfere with proper WEP operation.
