The answer turns out to be a new kernel driver which can be found here: http://arjan.opmeer.net/elantech/ This isn't in 2.6.27, but I'm guessing that it will be merged in time for 2.6.28. It seems to work for me; I can toggle tap-to-click using the gsynaptics utility.
