I am beginning to suspect that what I experienced was a result of a weird interaction between the package resolvconf and the rt2860sta driver. I purged resolvconf for a different reason from my system three days ago and this problem has occurred only once, instead of several times a day, and thus far not at all with 1.8.0.0-2. If I can't reproduce it in the future, I'll just close it, since there isn't enough information to make it worthwhile to reassign it to resolvconf.
