With an active session, this is indeed a "bug" of sorts (but see bug 522468).
However, at an X login prompt, it's useful: how else would notifications work
at that time?

Our current solution is in /usr/share/eeepc-acpi-scripts/functions.sh. Feel
free to (try to) improve it... :-)
