I just tried installing Debian onto my new EeePC 901 using the specific installer. I chose expert mode, and chose to make a squeeze machine with just the standard system chosen in tasksel.

When the system rebooted, I tried to log in as root, but it refused to let me in. I tried to log in as my mortal user, but it didn't even give me a password prompt. Rebooting in single user mode, it said that the root account was locked, and spawned a shell.

Running passwd unlocked the root account. The user account didn't even exist, which was fixed by running adduser.

So, I have solved the problems for myself, but this could trip up people quite easily.
