If you went from 2.6.26 (lenny kernel) to 2.6.32 (squeeze kernel) you may have just gone from ath0 (old, non-free madwifi driver) -> wlan0 (new, free ath5k driver, in kernel). I guess you're using a kernel backport with that? lenny never had support for ath5k. if that was your starting point for squeeze, then my theory about ath0 -> wlan0 change is less likely. just look over that Upgrade page carefully.
