Ah, a little more fiddling revealed it to be something in my .xemacs
files. And a lot of binary searching revealed that removing from
custom.el the line:
'(lazy-lock-mode t nil (lazy-lock))
fixes the problem. Switching Lazy-lock back on from within customize
brings the problem back.
