Marc, I feel disappointed that you seem to assume that commercial vendors would engage in the behaviour you describe above by default. Maybe someone, somewhere made mistakes (I have no personal proof of that), but there are other vendors and other sales people, and even the people and companies that you refer to might have made mistakes in the past in your opinion, they deserve a second chance. You must be aware that a number of "commercial" companies on this list try to behave differently than what you describe and sell serious technical support with no lock-in strategies, just billable by the hour of actual development work or billable on fixed fee development and support contracts.
