This is not always true. I run a public wiki that has not seen any spam in about 2 years (balloonboard.org), and I haven't noted spamming on any of other public wikis I use. But I imagine it is a growing problem. I'd prefer to keep the wiki open to start with, and only close it if we have to. I suppose a simple email registration scheme would not be too much of a problem.
