Well I am also a newbie to emdebian, and have a working set of tools up and running. I am running real Debian-sid, so that may be the reason I am not hitting the kind of problems you hint at. Knowing the problems might help in solving them. And yes, I use UK mirrors. The have successfully build all the packages needed for i386 base-file, except gnupg, which fails in configure with what looks like a compiler problem.
