As you will see, as soon as you do: --admindir=/var/lib/dpkg (instead of --admindir=var/lib/dpkg) you will get that error again.
This is a problem with fakechroot and i reported it together with a patch here [1]. Read more about the bug there. Fixing the issue by the suggested workaround is also unacceptable because this bug does not only affect dpkg but any other binary that accesses a absolute path and hence triggers this error.
