More people are using network services more frequently than ever before. Besides this huge leap in traffic volumes,networks also must be handle heavy data,like video clips,digital photos,music and ringtone downloads,presentation files with animation and other rich multimedia content. The rise in 2007 of broadcasts to mobile handsets has created new streams of network traffic. Every minute,millions of users around the world are using thousands of different devices to enter the network,and those devices use diverse operating systems,different versions of each OS,and different protocols and access technologies. Users don't want to learn a different set of procedures for each device they own. Therefore,to allow seamless,user-friendly access,network operators must adopt open standards,and must ensure that their networks can accommodate multiple kinds of access technologies. They need ultra-fast broadband technology,optical fiber systems,streaming technology,packet technology,multiple-mode capabilities,and Internet protocol-based (IP-based) technology. Meanwhile,digital technology continues to alter the telecommunications and broadcasting landscapes tremendously. Once separate services,like voice transmissions and data exchanges,now are seamlessly available on a single mobile handset. Previously complicated and expensive activities like videoconferences now are a matter of routine even for small outfits. Similarly,even private individuals now have the ability to create and compile moving images with audio accompaniment,and to send this content to as many recipients as they wish across the Internet. All these changes are possible thanks to advances in digital compression technologies,embedded system designs,content-editing software,optical fiber technology,and efficient spectrum use. Shifts to IPTV,broadband and multimedia content are driving the evolution of next-generation networks delivering diverse services across different access technologies. Networks are upgrading from vertical to horizontal architectures whose packet-based transport systems will handle everything from basic voice telephony to quadruple-play packages (voice,video,data and broadcasting),plus mobile and fixed lines. The new capabilities these networks offer are realigning industry borders,generating new business models,and creating a revolution in day-to-day business and social interactions.
