What do u want to do with Apache? There are much smaller Web-Servers (I like boa very much), and better Proxy Servers (I like Squidvery much). Apache is a full featured very good Web-Server, but I dont think this is needed for Firewalls? Of course a Bastion Host Serving Web-Pages is best suited with Apache... just another Brick in the Wall :) I bet you can build apache without any database support.
