kernel 2.4 and iptables netfilter

i compiled kernel 2.4 started up and there were no problems. after that i
wanted to setup up my iptables. i tried there several frontends for but all
keep saying that i iehter should upgrade iptables or the frondend software. for
me it does not seem to work.
does somebody know that problem?
