Don't forget that you can use 'ifconfig' to assign IP addresses on the fly, which is always recommended before you start changing config files.
ex.) 'ifconfig ethX 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0' If you're using a CIDR netmask that is anything but a /24, you might need to specify broadcast address too, as it seems to use a Class C broadcast by default.
