hello list, i'm running a [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 16mb of ram as a small dsl router using debian testing (more or less minimal install) and kernel 2.6.8.1, natting with netfilter/iptables.
since i originally built the system on a pentium 233, i know xfer up to 120kbytes/sec are possible, after replacing the overspec box with the above mentioned 486 i'm getting about 50kb max, however. i'm seeing sad numbers like these at 20kby/s: cpu: 22%us, 10%sy, 0%ni, 62%id, 0%wa, 1%hi, 4%si mem: 13668k total, 13360k used, 308k free, 420k buffers swap: 31240k total, 2128k used, 29112k free, 5912k cached load increases to 2+ while idle time is 40%+ at the same time. nics are one etherlinkiii and one smc-ultra where do i find information about tuning the system towards a bit more performance? i suspected the little amount of memory to be the major issue but vmstat shows about 1.5 meg free. could it be the nics? any help with this is very much appreciated, thanks, Volker Eckert.
