How to upgrade gcc

Hello , 
I want to Upgrade gcc from 3.35 to gcc 4.0 ... 
      Can any one tell me how to do it ... 
 I tried .. installed cpp4.0 ,gcc 4.0 and gcc-base 4.0 ,but it is not
upgrading ..
