The second NetCDF 4.4.1 release candidate has been published along with the 4.3.0 release of the modern NetCDF C++ interface (netcdf-cxx) and NetCDF Fortran 4.4.4. [0]
Both netcdf-cxx (4.3.0+ds-2) and netcdf-fortan (4.4.4+ds-1) are available in unstable, because neither require a transition. Only some new symbols in libnetcdff, and libnetcdf_c++4 has no reverse dependencies yet. The legacy NetCDF C++ interface packaged in netcdf-cxx-legacy is not expected to get a new release ever again, so its reverse dependencies should consider moving to the modern C++ interface. NetCDF-C 4.4.1 RC2 unexpectedly reverted the SOVERSION from 12 to 11, which the commit history documents as unintended, but the symbols changes between 4.4.0 and 4.4.1 RC1 confirm was correct. Depending on the outcome of the discussion in the upstream issue tracker [1] we may need to change the library package name to libnetcdf11a if upstream decides to stick to SOVERSION 11 as we'll do need a transition. I'm still not sure yet when the final NetCDF 4.4.1 release will be made, but I don't think it will take long.
