The second build of openscenegraph-3.4 (3.4.0+dfsg1-4) did not FTBFS, so the GCC issue doesn't seem to be persistent. With the rebuilt openscenegraph-3.4 the osgearth (2.8.0+dfsg-1~exp1) build succeeds as expected.
