Hmm - You're not running those services in the chroot, are you? It's
probably detecting the upgrades and then trying to restart services that
it's really not permitted to restart.

As a quick test, can you comment out that bit in the postinst and "dpkg
--configure -a" it to get it through so you can test? I'm fairly certain
that i386 users have exercised the process restarts enough times that we
can beleive it will work correctly.
