GNU Libc in CVS now include Libidn as an add-on, and modify the getaddrinfo API with some flags to request IDN processing. I believe it would be simple to back-port it to whatever Libc version Debian uses. The hooks into the getaddrinfo implementation are minimal. I'm told the API is being adopted within Open Group.
