I am aware of that.  I was under the impression that on a Debian system
compiling stuff with gcc --std=c99 will give me a (partially) compliant
implementation of C99.  That assumption is not valid if GCC does not
communicate the selected standard version to the libc.

But that's a GCC issue, not a libc issue.
