Well I honestly have no idea what is wrong with your system. If it was a problem with i386 in general, believe me, I would have had hundreds of bug reports by now. I can only surmise that it is something specific to your system, but since you claim to have done a clean install, I have no idea what that something is. Do you have anything specialized on your system at all? Perhaps an old libc6-i586 or libc6-i686 package? Maybe something else you did strange? Perhaps an odd ld-preload, or something funky with your kernel? I've asked other people with the same toolchain you have, and they have no problems compiling at all.
