I'm not sure if this is the cause or the symptom of some problems that have occurred since I ran apt-get dist-upgrade. Now, `tar' prints 'Segmentation fault' and `ls -l' gives total 4756 Segmentation fault (with the number after 'total' changing) As for your questions, I'm not sure how to find out.
