I recently compiled a ppc64 version of glibc 2.3.6 with gcc-4.0.
I have used the resulting ppc64 libraries intensively for a few days
and I could not find any problems with it.
I also used the '-g1' switch for compilation without any problems,
so I think that '-g1' (which caused some compilation errors with
glibc 2.3.5 and gcc-3.4) can be safely reenabled again on powerpc/ppc64.

It's also what I used in the packages I built.
