Yes. Sorry, I wasn't clear.

I was using "nis<version>" as a shorthand for "the system that
has the broken packages, whatever they are, presumably libc6".

As I mentioned in passing, the two libc6 versions I am using are:

    libc6_2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6  -> nis works
    libc6_2.3.6.ds1-13etch5   -> nis is broken
