I am not using NIS and have what seems to be the same issue. Using Squeeze . this is an open-vz running dovecot-imap .
*some* users can not check their mail. there is no useful error written to any log file that I could find. this is the dovecot log entry for a failed auth: Oct 14 10:00:15 webmail dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<user1234>, method=PLAIN, rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx , lip=10.100.100.89 as root when I do " su - non-working-user-for-imap" I get : su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info (Ignored) for a user able to use imap I do not get that error. Those users can log into an etch dovecot server . Until this is fixed i am switching the container to a different release .
