There is no proxy, this is on a consumer home internet connection.

Anyway it does not matter, thank you, running "sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/deb.debian.org*" fixed things up.

As a matter of fact, it pulled a whole lot of updates, which leads me to believe that up until that point it did *not* install any updates.

That's bad.

The laptop is for a friend, it should maintain itself, and I expected as much from Debian. Now I am wondering if another Trixie laptop that I prepared for another, elderly person, is getting its updates.

Maybe this can be considered a bug in apt.

Apparently the two don't really match, possibly because you have an http
proxy or something. You can try to drop the old information to make sure
it gets it for real:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/deb.debian.org*

and re-run sudo apt update
