  Best practice would be to create a bug in the Debian BTS to indicate
you're working on it. However, since this is currently being discussed
on the Go Team's mailing list, a bug might be overkill since we're all
aware of your interest in helping out.

  And feel free to create a (draft) PR on GitHub, then send an email to
the list with a link.
