I tried running Gnome on a box that had sound module problems,
and found I was unable to run anything.

One solution would be to have a dummy version of esd that discards 
its input.  Some such approach is *necessary* for those systems where 
there is no sound support (yet), such as portables with a Maestro 
chip, or desktops with no sound card at all.
